COWBOY DOWN (The Kings of Montana, Book 1) by Vanessa Gray Bartal

Layla Smith is all alone. She has been in foster care for the past several years but now that she's of age, she is being sent out on her own with no money, no job and no family. Then she witnesses a murder and to keep her safe she is placed into the witness protection program. The Sheriff sends her away from Chicago to his cousin's remote Montana ranch. Cade King was not only handsome but lucky, until one day his luck ran out. An accident changes his life completely and now he's filled with anger and resentment toward his situation. His bitterness is extends to Layla but it seems to roll off her back. Cade thinks she'll pity him but Layla only shows him loving kindness which slowly begins to erode his protective armor. As they get to know each other they slowly begin to let down their guard. There is a connection between them that neither can explain. But danger is close at hand and the killer won't stop until he cleans-up his loose end.

I thoroughly enjoyed Cowboy Down. I have never read anything by this author but was pleasantly surprised to find a good, clean story that will sweep you away to a remote ranch in Montana. I can't remember reading about a hero in Cade's position but I found it very intriguing. It felt to me, that all the emotions Cade experienced rang true. I loved all the interaction between Layla and Cade. Layla was an excellent heroine. Although she had been through so much and though she tried to protect herself from hurt, she still knew how to give love. One thing that I really liked about this story was all the family interaction. The brothers are rugged and interesting to get to know and I can't wait to read the story of each of them. This tale had a nice balance of tender moments, humorous moments, serious moments and tense moments. I enjoyed my time at the King's Ranch and look forward to returning there for Cowboy Lost!
