A MILE APART by Sarah Jae Foster

Eden Montgomery lost her husband and unborn child in a mine blast.  Closing the mine, she vows never to open it again.  She now runs Whistle Creek supply store which she likes, however, she doesn't think too highly of miners and their lust for gold, especially Joseph Benton.  Joseph lost his wife and now has the responsibility to care for his son, which is a difficult thing to do in a mining camp.  When Joseph becomes ill, Eden cares for him and his son.  As Eden and Joseph get to know each other better, they realize they may have been too quick to judge one another.  Time will tell.  Meanwhile, things are heating up in the mining camp as someone threatens the miners, while another tries to buy their claims.  Eden is left with a difficult decision.  Something she vowed she would never do.

 A Mile Apart was an quick, enjoyable read.  The writing had an easy flow to it that just kept the reader going, through the whole story.  It was fun getting to know all the folks in Whistle Creek, except for a couple of them (*grin*).    Joseph was a character that I didn't really care for in the beginning, but liked him later on.  Eden was a strong woman but she definitely had a soft side to her.  The story is set in a mining camp and you get a glimpse of the harshness of that life style.  Overall it was a good story and one I would recommend to those who like a good, clean, historical story, with a splash of inspiration.
